Each granum is further made of 10 to 100 dice-like, overlaid, membranous sections called as thylakoids. Each thylakoid is disconnected from the stroma or the matrix of the chloroplast by its membranes. Concept of photosynthetic unit: In 1932, Robert Emerson, and William Arnold provided the first evidence for the cooperation of many chlorophyll molecules in energy conversion during photosynthesis. Using suspensions of the alga Chlorella and flashing lights of very short duration a saturating intensity, they determined the minimum amount of light needed to produce maximal oxygen production during photosynthesis. Based on the number of chlorophyll molecules present in the preparation, they calculated that one molecule of oxygen was being released during a brief flash of light for every 2500 molecules of chlorophyll present. It was later shown that a minimum of 8 photons must be absorbed to produce one molecule of oxygen and for this about 300 or so chlorophyll molecules act together as one photosynthetic unit in which only one member of the group- the reaction center chlorophyll- actually transfers electrons to an electron acceptor. Ask 4 Questions Before Hiring a GMAT Tutor GMAT MBA Admissions Blog Your GMAT score is obviously a critical component of your business school application (although, I’d argue, perhaps not as important as many people make it out to be), and most folks need to invest a significant amount of time in preparing for it. Certain GMAT preparation approaches can work better for some people relative to others. The four basic options with GMAT prep are: Self-study Online prep In class GMAT prep course Using a GMAT tutor There are some basic guidelines to consider when choosing across these four options. For example, self-study or online prep generally works best when you have a significant amount of time to prepare, are generally very structured and good at managing your time, and tend to be a good problem solver who enjoys figuring things out. A prep course tends to be a great basic way to get the fundamentals, and works well for anyone that feels they just need a baseline of knowledge from which to build. GMAT tutors are a great option for folks that are either a) top performers striving for a 700+ score or b) struggling, and in need of customized guidance to help explain concepts in a way that they will understand. A private GMAT tutor, at the right price, is an attractive option due to the customized, personalized approach. That said, we realize it’s not for everybody (far from it). In any case, this post is for individuals considering private tutoring, and will offer up four key questions to ask during the process of choosing a GMAT tutor. After all, if you’re going to invest in private GMAT tutoring, you want to identify the best tutor for you. Some Context There is a pretty wide variety of factors to consider when evaluating potential GMAT tutors or tutoring companies, such as the tutor’s own GMAT score (have they proven they can ace the test), tutor’s GMAT tutoring or teaching experience (have they proven they can teach strategies for success to others), GMAT training received, materials used, confidence which each section of the test, price, location, teaching style, “fit” with student, availability, whether they tutor actually went to business school (and which one) and many more. All of these factors matter, but it’s probably intuitive that some matter more than others. It might be difficult to determine which factors really matter, and which should be considered “nice to haves.” The four ideas below are an attempt to capture all the relevant considerations when choosing a GMAT tutor â€" they are a way to synthesize a long list of factors into some key guidelines. Four Key Questions #1 Expertise: Does the tutor have a well-rounded mix of experience and personal success with the GMAT? Say your goal is getting into an average business school and you thus need to score a 600 or higher. A great tutor for you might not be a great tutor for someone committed to breaking 730 and going to Harvard Business School. The second person probably needs advanced guidance on the most demanding questions, while you may not. But, the following three rules will hold true for any student studying for the GMAT, regardless of skill level or target score: Someone with a perfect 800 GMAT score but no tutoring experience is probably not going to be a great tutor. Someone with a 620 GMAT score but lots of tutoring experience is probably not a great option either â€" they don’t appear to have a great mastery of the material themselves. Some amount of professional training in GMAT prep is clearly desirable, all else equal. When it comes to“expertise” tutoring for the GMAT, the best tutors display an attractive mix of the above characteristics. At MyGuru, we often get questions such as “did the tutor score in the 99th percentile.” Or, “how many years of professional training has the tutor had.” These are fine questions, but a holistic view of the tutor’s expertise is what’s really important. The answer to the above two questions is “No” and “0” for several of our best GMAT tutors. But, if the tutor scored in the 93rd percentile, and has been tutoring privately for 6 years, they could be a fantastic fit for you (as is the case with several of our tutors). #2 Approach: Does the tutor focus on core concepts and use official practice tests? In our view, there just aren’t huge differences between all of the GMAT prep materials available online or in a book store. Some are certainly better than others. Most cover in reasonable detail each section of the GMAT and the core concepts tested. It is these core concepts which you need to master and be able to apply on test day. When discussing materials to use, your tutor should be comfortable working with whatever GMAT prep materials you already have, although they might have their own personal preferences and we always recommend starting with the Official Guide to the GMAT. They should certainly suggest that taking official timed practice tests is an important part of the process. Official tests under timed conditions are key â€" that’s the only true way to test progress. A tutor that relies too heavily on a particular set of materials or methodology may not fundamentally be comfortable enough with the core concepts tested on the GMAT to answer questions or explain things in different ways that may make more sense to you. #3 Style: Do you want an GMAT genius or a trusted guide and mentor? We, in general, see two types of tutors from a style perspective. The first is simply a GMAT genius. She can clearly and crisply articulate the key to the most complex GMAT questions. The Mentor/Guide, on the other hand, focuses more on helping you develop a study plan, provides motivation, time management through the preparation process, and helps you structure your journey towards business school. Often times, the first type of tutor completely aced the GMAT, but never went to business school. The second type of tutor may have scored pretty well on the GMAT, but didn’t ace it. However, they ultimately went to a top 10 business school and can put the test in perspective for you and help calm your nerves. Of course, most tutors display characteristics of both generic tutor categories. But, you should ask yourself, what type of tutor, if I had to choose, would I prefer? After speaking with a potential tutor or reading an introductory email from one, you can often get a sense for whi ch category they fall into. #4 Logistics: Will this tutor be easy to work with? Studying for the GMAT and applying to business school is stressful enough, especially if you’re currently working full time. You don’t want to choose a tutor with the potential to increase this stress by responding to emails slowly, being difficult to schedule with, or being located far away requiring you to sit in traffic on the way to a session. So, while certainly the expertise, approach, and style of the tutor are probably more important than logistical concerns, don’t ignore logistics. If you work full time, and you find the perfect tutor, but he or she is located a 45 minute drive from you, think about whether that’s really going to be practical. Choosing an online tutor can often alleviate many logistical concerns. If you have the right mindset and the tutor is using the right technology (video camera, electronic tablet/pen, etc.), an online tutor can actually be extremely convenient. But, it’s certainly different than in-person tutoring, and if you aren’t comfortable with it, stick with in-person tutoring. Again, if you choose an online tutor but really aren’t comfortable with it, that will be stressful. By asking these four questions of any potential tutor or GMAT tutoring company, you’ll be well on your way to choosing an effective partner to aid you on your journey towards a top business school. Each user can either input text with a keyboard, or do voice-to-text.Additional features include  pre-made phrasebooks, offline language packs for some languages and the option to  pin favorite translations.While you cant get instant camera translation like with Google Translate, the photo feature is clean, simple and may work better for smaller-sized texts.Considering the above, Microsoft Translator might be best for business and academic purposes. Its not quite as user-friendly as Google Translate, but it has its advantages.Yandex.TranslateYandex is the translation app I found the most unexpectedly exciting. Lets look at the breakdown:It offers text  translations in more than 90 languages. Not bad.It includes voice, conversation and photo translations for some languages. For me, these all worked pretty well.Additional features include built-in  dictionaries,  whole website translation, phrase collections, some o ffline language pair packs and the ability to save translations in Favorites.It also gives you the ability to interact with social media accounts and texting apps for quick communication.So thats all good to know. But what was most impressive to me was the actual translation tech. As you type or talk, you can watch the translation shift and change according to the current context. In my experience, Yandex was  the best at using context  out of any of the apps on this list.No joke, it photo-translated an entire page from Prousts À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) from the original French in a way that was mainly comprehensible. And when I started inputting the actual text, it started translating it in a way that was virtually indistinguishable from a human translation. Im not suggesting that it was able to make the same refined choices a human literary translator would make, but it definitely seemed to be educating itself as it went along.Yandexs penchant for con text may  actually make it work less well overall for shorter texts like signs and titles. I noticed it sometimes tries to make sentences of bits of text that arent actually linked. However, it can be  frighteningly good at translating longer texts written in complete sentences. Frighteningly. Time to prepare for the robot revolution.Naver PapagoPapago is a fairly new app made by Naver, the corporation behind the popular Korean search engine of the same name. Heres what its got:Text translations between 13 languages.Voice, photo, and conversation translation between some languages. Voice recognition works pretty well; photo translation seems to work best for larger text. It isnt as intuitive as some photo translation on other apps. However, it gives you more options, allowing you to select what text you want translated.Handwriting input for East Asian languages (which, in my opinion and experience, works better than the Google Translate handwriting input).Whole website translation, pre-made phrasebooks with cool features like sample conversations and on-off switches for honorifics. It also has Papago Mini, which allows you to highlight any text on your phone screen and receive an instant translation without even switching apps.Overall, Papago in some ways feels like a work in progress, but an ambitious and exciting one. Some of the features, like photo translation, feel a little shaky, but others, like the handwriting input, are incredible. Among English speakers, this one  will no doubt appeal most strongly to learners of Korean, Chinese and Japanese.iTranslateiTranslate is another translation app that offers all the main features of the major apps above, but it doesnt offer all of them for free. Heres what were looking at:Text translations between 100 languages.Voice, conversation, photo and website translation.Offline translation for over 40 languages.Multiple additional features, including  dictionaries and verb conjugations, the ability to rate translatio ns and the ability to adjust audio speed.Compatibility with the Dash Pro translating earphones.Some features, including voice translation and Lens (the photo translation tech) are only available with iTranslate Pro for  $39.99 a year (theres a week-long free trial).I found that Lens was better at capturing smaller text in low-contrast situations than other apps. The voice recognition technology was also pretty impressive. However, in my experience, the actual translation results were mixed. Unlike with Yandex, iTranslate  seems to do best with shorter, conversation-based translations.In general, iTranslate isnt as user-friendly as Google Translate or many other apps, but theres a lot under the hood. Its main appeal is that it offers all-in-one features over a variety of languages. It seems like it would be best for dedicated travelers and business professionals who want to get as much as possible out of  only one app and are willing to spend some time learning to use it most effecti vely.SayHiThis super simple app uses Microsofts translation tech along with a different type of speech tech and only one main feature:  basic two-way conversation.SayHi can quickly be fired up when you need it for a bilingual conversation. Its the simplest, most intuitive app on this list, and is good for everyone to have on hand, as it could come in handy in an emergency or other unexpected situation.Reverso Translation DictionaryYou may be wondering, what is a translation dictionary? Well, Reverso uses Googles voice translation tech, but then allows you to deep-dive into the results and examine them closely through definitions, example sentences, related phrases and conjugations. In other words, it doesnt just leave you hanging with the given translation but allows you to check for yourself how accurate it is.While, true to its name, Reverso makes it easy to reverse language pairs, its best application may be using a language you already know to look up idioms and other phrases yo ure unsure about in your target language. For example, I need to get some air in English brings up Jai besoin de prendre lair in French, along with related phrases and examples.Dictionary LingueeWhen you search for a word or phrase (which can also be done by voice lookup) on Linguee, you dont just get a definition. You get a host of already translated webpages between your learning and target language.So for example, if I search for how to say coffee in Russian, it gives me the word, ????, along with example sentences and related words and phrases. It then gives me a whole list of excerpts taken from real websites that include the word coffee in English with the surrounding language and the Russian version of those same sentences.Linguee gives you the chance to see how a word or a phrase has been translated in context, over multiple contexts.This makes Linguee not only a great dictionary app, but a wonderful tool for professional translators, language learners and anyone else studyi ng a language for any reason.The robot revolution may not actually be here yet.But theres no harm in making peace with the machines already among us.Download any of these great translation apps for Android and see for yourself.Elisabeth Cook is a freelance writer who blogs at Lit All Over.
